How to Make a Layered Soda Can Flower Embellishment

For those of you still dealing with temps in the 20's and 30's, I apologize in advance for the next several posts.  We've had two nice weekends in row here in the South (nice enough to paint even!) and I've been gardening!  Yes, gardening.  I'll have a few posts over the next couple of weeks to show you what I've been working on.  For now, how about if we get started with some indoor projects that will make it feel like Spring is here!

I've been making and selling little aluminum embellishments in my Etsy shop for a couple of years now and I just love them.  My customers have come up with some really great ways to use these pieces in their own projects, too.  One of them used these butterflies to make napkin rings and I've used them to make both Christmas tree ornaments and have even added a metal stake to use as garden decoration.

And these adorable tiny flowers were made from the UPC symbol section of soda cans.  One of my customers incorporated them into her jewelry creations.

Today I'm going to show you how to make your own layered soda can flower embellishments.  I've used these flowers as embellishments for gifts but I think they'd be great on handmade cards, too.  And many of my customers have used these as Christmas tree ornaments as well.  Be sure to check out the video tutorial, then tell me how you'll use them!

DIY Valentine Earrings: From Paper Beads and Soda Cans

And we jump straight from Christmas and New Year's to....Valentine's Day!  I'm actually not a fan of Valentine's Day, at least not the over commercialized Valentine's Day that we've all come to know and love.  Receiving highly over priced roses that will be dead in a week's time or waiting in line for two hours to get a table at your favorite restaurant are not all that romantic to me!! I'd much rather enjoy the company of loved one's while making dinner together and sharing handmade gifts from the heart.  To me, that says love! But I digress...

Today, I want to show you how I made these.

I did a video tutorial for this one so hop over to YouTube to get the step-by-step instructions.  You might find the following videos helpful, too, when making this pair of earrings:

Teeny Tiny Trinket Boxes made from Soda Cans

I've been playing around soda cans again!  Look at these teeny tiny trinket boxes that I came up with

If you want to see how I made them check out my Video Tutorial.  They are the perfect size for a small pair of earings or a ring...say for Mother's Day?  My first go at a soda can box was much larger but didn't have a lid and required a bit of hand sewing.  Check it out here.

Marking Your Plants - the Upcycled Way!

I came across a bunch of really cute upcycled garden markers on Upcycle Magazines website the other day.  There are 8 adorable ideas for marking those vegetable/flower/herb gardens without buying a thing.  I have another to add to their list and I'm going to show you how to use old soda cans and sharpies to make some really cute garden markers.  You can get really creative if you like or you can keep it simple.  Here's what you'll need:

1.  Some clean soda cans that you have cut the tops and bottoms from - be careful the edges are sharp!

2.  Something to cut with - keep it simple with a pair of scissors or get fancy with die cutting/embossing instruments meant for scrapbooking.

3.  Something to write with - a sharpie will do just fine but so will other markers and inks made for slick surfaces

Now that you have all your supplies gathered you can start cutting up your sheets of aluminum into the shapes you desire.  Keep it simple using your scissors to cut out simple stake-like tags.  Or you can pull your die cutting machine and let it do the cutting for you.  I even added some embossing to a few of mine. You'll probably need to flatten the aluminum which can be done easily by rubbing it lightly along the edge of a table. I find it easier to flatten after I cut the shape rather than trying to do the full sheet at once.  You're likely to make unsightly creases if you do it first.

Well, that was easy wasn't it?  Time to label your markers:

Add some simple wire or skewers that will easily hold your marker in the ground, like this:

And now to the garden:
